K-8 Curriculum

At Shallowford Presbyterian School, we believe that very child is unique, which is why SPS believes in nurturing the whole child physically, emotionally, socially, cognitively and spiritually. We offer a challenging, balanced curriculum that encourages exploration and discovery while staying aligned with the Georgia Standards, while allowing our teachers to pull information and activities from various curriculum in order to meet each student where they are on their learning journey. Our classrooms are student-centered and focused on developing critical thinking skills. Our small class sizes allow our teachers to customize instruction in order to meet the diverse needs of our learners.

Each class has weekly specials including library, technology, music, P.E., Spanish, Christian Education, and art, as well as daily 30 minute recess on one of our three age-level appropriate, tree-shaded playgrounds. SPS also has a computer lab where 1st-5th grade students learn typing, research, and play class-appropriate learning games. Grades 6-8 have laptops available in the classroom but are also actively learning and participating in activities without their computers, and are completing assignments in writing.
SPS's 6th-8th Grade
By developing a K-8 school, SPS has been able to continue to grow our students’ academic, social, and emotional foundation in a nurturing and supportive environment. Students have the opportunity to be confident leaders, tutors, and mentors to younger students. Given a balance of freedom and responsibility, they are encouraged to become self-reliant and self-disciplined and to take control of their growth as scholars, citizens, and contributors. Students are supported and given the framework needed to handle strong emotions, set and meet goals, make good decisions, and forge positive relationships.
Class size is restricted to sixteen and has the support of an assistant teacher, making it possible to individualize instruction. The curriculum deepens students’ exposure to foundational concepts while stressing critical, interpretive, and evaluative thinking skills. Within an engaging classroom, students strengthen their reading comprehension and writing skills, expand their history and geography knowledge, and learn advanced mathematical concepts in preparation for higher level education. In addition to the core fundamentals, SPS 6th-8th grade will offer Physical Education, Health, Music, Art, Spanish, and Christian Education in an intensive semester format.
By incorporating technology, workshops, and hands-on experience, each student develops the skills to become an active, motivated, and independent learner, positioning them for success in their future learning endeavors. It is our goal to provide students with educational excellence with an affordable yearly tuition.

Our 8th graders have transitioned seamlessly into high school, having gained the experience and confidence to ask questions and make sure their voice is being heard, even when moving to a larger school environment.
